What is the citizen’s legal support team?
Our volunteering Legal Team came to existence in December 2002, in an effort to respond to the countless citizen requests from all around Greece to help them in their fight against environmental problems.
Volunteering lawyers, environmentalists, town planners and engineers participate in this team and offer their valuable knowledge and support to local initiatives and to citizens.
Its role is to explain the legal framework and the alternative solutions, to make easier for citizens to access necessary information, to propose possible ways of dealing with the situation, and support the denouncers. Our legal team is not a substitute to the citizens action but a support to it.

In 10 years, our Legal Team has responded to more than 700 environmental degradation cases and in 2009 it was awarded for its contribution by the President of Greece, Mr. Karolos Papoulias.
The legal team has a voice of its own! In cooperation with the Policy department of WWF Greece, it publicly comments on the consequences of suggested legislation regarding the natural environment.
How to contact us...
Would you like to ask for help from the legal team for an environmental problem you've come across? Remember that the legal team will support your denouncement, but won't be the denouncer instead of you.
Please note that your report should be written, signed and contain in detail the problem and your actions so far. We need photographs, diagrams, map extracts and any other proof you have in order to help us have a clear picture of the problem.
Some other useful advice...
- Collect enough evidence on the problem (photographs, testimonies, documents).
- Collect basic information that will make examining it easier: Under which jurisdiction is the area? Is it under a protection regime? What is the tenure status of the area (i.e. private, public, belonging to the church)? Has there been similar initiatives by others in the past?
- Unite with other citizens, organizations, unions. Collective action has a stronger impact and causes a bigger reaction from the state. Also try to mobilize the Media (local, national) in order for the story to go public.
- Find the authorities responsible and contact them by pointing out your right to be informed promptly. The authorities are obliged by law to respond to citizens within a certain period of time.

Frequently asked questions
The legal team only deals with reports by individuals that state their name, because in this way, the unhindered communication between the citizens and the Legal Teams is secured. In no case whatsoever will we reveal your name to others, except if you give us your permission.
As the case progresses, a new briefing on the status of the environment or on the result of the actions of the responsible bodies will be necessary. The Legal Team is an effort to support active citizens and therefore can't function without mutual trust.
WWF doesn't takes on the cases to court or assumes legal standing in place of the denouncers. We don't have the necessary resources for something like that, but even if it was possible, it wouldn't be desirable, given that what we're aiming for, is helping active citizens. In most of the cases, the citizens take the actions suggested by the Legal Team, given that they agree with them. Without the citizens themselves becoming active, we can't hope to protect the environment and improve the quality of life for all of us.
Only in the case when revealing the denouncer's identity could have serious consequences, the Legal Team will, on behalf of WWF Greece, get in contact with the responsible state agencies.
Legal Team is not capable of visiting a location, so an accusation must be as best as possible substantiated with photographs and diagrams. Besides, in order the case to be settled efficiently, it's important that an autopsy and a written substation of the problem are made by the responsible authorities.
Jurisdiction on sanctions, decisions, looking into accusations and enforcing fines or restraining measures falls exclusively to the state agencies. As a non government organization, we are active on mobilizing citizens and we stand up for environmental law, doing what is possible on our limited resources. Experience has shown that persistent citizens can achieve a lot, especially if armed with knowledge and the appropriate tools. For example, state agencies are obliged by law to respond to citizen questions within a certain time period. We can direct you to the responsible agency which is hence obliged to respond to you.
The legal team deals with subjects concerning the natural environment and the wild fauna and flora. We examine subjects that have to do mainly with the degradation of natural habitats due to various activities (i.e. tree cutting, deforestation, pollution, violations and unauthorized building in protected areas), or due to the constructions or activities with important consequences to the natural environment (i.e. road-building, mining and similar operations, tourist and industrial facilities). In addition, cases of illegal exploitation or killing of wild flora and fauna (i.e. poaching and illegal possession of species of wild flora and fauna).
The legal team is not too experienced on matters of degradation of human environment (i.e. urban pollution), or matters concerning pets. In these cases, we suggest to contact the corresponding organizations.
The Legal Team holds meetings every two weeks. Due to heavy workload, priority goes to questions submitted by supporters of the organization. According to the case, the team suggests the suitable course of action to the person interested. As the case progresses and according to the response of the responsible services, it stays by its side.
