CONSUMERS

As consumers, we can all contribute to fish stock protection and, in turn, to marine ecosystem conservation.

Overfishing is largely due to fishing juvenile individuals that have not once had the chance to breed. Depending on the breeding rate and, in cases of fish like the bogue, on the natural sex change during their lifespan, overfishing can result in the extinction of certain species.

Both the Mediterranean Fisheries Regulation No 1967/2006 and national legislation determine the minimum fish size allowed for consumption.

What we can do

As consumers, we can support sustainable fishing by avoiding the consumption of:

  • juvenile fish and, generally, catches below the size limit,
  • fish during their breeding season,
  • illegal (protected) and threatened marine species.
